The tree died and was cut down about 2008. According to a Greenbelt News Review article at the time, this particular tree probably had nothing to do with Eleanor Roosevelt.

This is actually incorrect. The old Greenbelt Center Elementary school was the building directly adjacent to the Library.

Greenbelt is one of the few towns in the Washington area that are affordable,
have a sense of community, and are served by public transportation ( Terminus of
Metro's Greenline ). Close to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Univ. of
MD. Great cycling in the Beltsville Agricultural Center just north of GR.
